Chapter 10 - The Pirate Crew

1. Why did the boys choose Jackson's island as hideout?

Tom did not like Sundays because:

  1. he had to memorise at least five verses of the Bible for Sunday school.
  2. He had to have his face and neck inspected by his cousin Mary, to ensure cleanliness.
  3. he had to wear his 'other clothes'


2. Describe how the boys spent their time on Jackson's island.

At first, Tom just wet the soap and poured away the water. Being compelled by Mary, he bathed and returned groping for the towel with his hands, while soap suds and water dripped from his face. Even after wiping himself with the towel, he was still not scrubbed to Mary's satisfaction.


3. What was the strange sound that they heard?

Mary got Tom ready for Sunday school, in exchange for a brand new pocket knife.


4. Who were the people looking for?

Tom did not have a wide choice of clothes. He disliked his 'other clothes' as he was wearing the same clothes on all Sundays for the last two years.
