Chapter 3 - Tom has a wash

1. Why did Tom dislike Sundays?

Tom did not like Sundays because:

  1. he had to memorise at least five verses of the Bible for Sunday school.
  2. he had to have his face and neck inspected by his cousin Mary, to ensure cleanliness.
  3. he had to wear his 'other clothes'

2. Describe Tom washing himself?

Taking soap and basin outside the kitchen door, he set them on a little bench. At first, he just wet the soap and poured away the water. Being compelled by Mary, he bathed and returned groping for the towel with his hands, while soap suds and water dripped from his face. Even after wiping himself with the towel, he was still not scrubbed to Mary's satisfaction.

3. How did Mary got Tom ready for Sunday school?

Mary got Tom ready for Sunday school, in exchange for a brand new pocket knife.

She gave him a thorough wash, brushed his curly hair and neatly framed his face. She buttoned up his coat, turned his wide shirt collar down over his shoulders and clamped his straw hat on his head.

4. Why did Tom dislike his 'other clothes'?

Tom did not have a wide choice of clothes. He disliked his 'other clothes' as he was wearing the same clothes on all Sundays for the last two years.

Also, he had to take a bath before wearing the suit and he never liked the shoes.
