The narrator heard sounds of footsteps, but actually it was not the ghost. He had first assumed it. He didn’t say any see any shadow or figure in the dining room space. Had there been any ghost, they would have surely frightened the narrator. The story does not reveal the uncertain imposter. Hence, we believe it was just his assumption.
